One of my greatest airshow souvenir finds of all time has been cruise DVDs. To those wondering, cruise DVDs are short home made films that US Navy aircrews make to commemorate their deployment time “on the boat”. Now that YouTube has become more popular, the DVDs are fast becoming a thing of the past, but the videos live on.
The videos started on VHS cameras then to other formats as technology improved. With the excellent camera technology available today, the aerial footage is incredible.
The movies all follow a general format – music, aerial footage, refueling, launching and landing on the deck, port stops and the maintainers and officers. Sometimes there is some funny stuff, other times there is touching moments. During recent conflicts, there has even been some combat footage.
I truly enjoy these movies, and I intend to share as many of them as possible.
